From 24MLD Water Treatment Plant of Durg Municipal Corporation
Bhilai, Jan 17, 2019: Over a dozen employees of Water Treatment Plant and nearby offices were hospitalized after they inhaled chlorine gas which leaked from this water treatment facility of Durg Municipal Corporation. This incident brought the entire district administration on its toes. Fortunately, any casualty has not been reported. After breathing the chlorine gas, the victims are complaining dizziness, vomiting and difficulty in breathing. Condition of all the victims is said to be out of danger. District Collector Umesh Kumar Agrawal inspected the Jal Grih, where the incident occurred. Later he met the victims at district hospital and inquired about their health. I/c Engineer of this water treatment plant has been removed from this department.
The mishap occurred at the BMC’s water treatment facility “Jal Grih” situated in front of Science College in Durg. At around 09:00 hrs the employees realized that some amount of chlorine gas was leaking from the 900 kilo liter capacity tank. This was due to malfunctioning of the valve. Soon, heavy amount of gas started leaking from this valve. Panicked employees rushed to the safe spots. Team of NDRF and BSP Fire Brigade were called in to bring the situation under control. It took about five hours to bring the situation under control.
The employees of Filter Plant, PMAY office and Joint Director – Civic Bodies were affected from the gas leak. About a dozen affected people were admitted in the casualty of District Hospital. All of them were discharged in the evening.
