Bhilai, Feb 04, 2019: For SAIL and more so for its flagship plant Bhilai, celebrating 60 years of producing steel for the Nation, the date February 04 is significant. The journey of production at Bhilai that continues to shine in the steel sector and the public sector arena began on this day, 60 years back, when on February 04, 1959, the first hot metal flowed out from Blast Furnace 01 with the pressing of button by the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad. Bhilai Steel Plant was set up with Soviet collaboration, and Blast Furnace #1 that was built with the then technology available still stands tall, having cumulatively produced about 24.3 million tonnes of hot metal so far.
The iron making collective of Bhilai Steel Plant celebrated the completion of 60 years of production from Blast Furnace #1. At a ceremony attended by the men manning and maintaining BF 01 and other members of iron making collective of the Plant, CEO AK Rath cut the cake along with ED (Works) PK Dash, ED (Mines) Mr Biswas, ED (MM), SK Basar and employees working in BF 1 to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, CEO complimented the Blast Furnace collective for operating such an old furnace beyond its capacity for as long as 60 years. Congratulating the BF 1 Team, Rath said this could happen because of the excellent work culture here.
In his address, PK Dash, ED (Works) congratulated the BF 1 team for this milestone achievement and for having successfully operated the furnace for so long. Today is a day of pride for all of us in SAIL and Bhilai, he said.
At the outset, Tapas Dasgupta, GM (BF 8) apprised the gathering about Blast Furnace 1. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony. A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion. The cultural programme was conducted by Supriyo Sen and US Rao, DGM (BF-Electrical). Mr Tokdar, DGM (BF –Operation) proposed the vote of thanks.
