Another significant milestone was crossed in SAIL- Bhilai Steel Plant’s 7 million tonne Modex Programme with the first heat from the second 160 Tonne capacity Convertor of Steel Melting Shop 3 Modex facility being taken successfully on 27th November 2018. AK Kabisatapathy, Executive Director, Projects was present. He congratulated the entire team of SMS 3, Projects – Steel Zone, allied shops & departments and equipment & technology suppliers.
Earlier in the day, the process for operationalising Convertor 2 of the 4 MTPA (million tonne per annum) Modex Facility SMS 3 got underway with AK Rath, CEO BSP beginning the pre-heating process in presence of PK Dash, ED (Works), AK Kabisatapathy, ED (Projects), KK Singh, ED (P&A), other senior officers of the Plant, Projects Dept., members of SMS 3 Team and representatives of technology and equipment suppliers.
After completion of pre-heating process, the Convertor was charged and subsequently blowing started at around 10 pm. Just before 11 pm, crude steel was tapped from the Convertor. It may be recalled that the first heat from Convertor 1 of SMS 3 was tapped on the night of 31st March 2018. Subsequently, two billet casters of SMS 3 were operationalised in April and May 2018 with successful hot trials of Caster 1 taken on 9th April 18 and successful hot trials of Caster 3 taken on 10th May 2018. On 28th September 2018, blooms were cast from the 3rd Caster – a Bloom cum billet Caster.
Yet another milestone was crossed on 8th Oct 2018 with commencement of hot trials of RH Degasser – an important link in the chain of manufacturing high quality blooms for producing 130 metre long rails at Universal Rail Mill
